Chiidoku Solving Strategy

Use a repeatable Chiidoku solving strategy based on closed units, candidate sets, forced cells, adjacency checks, and contradiction recovery.

A strong Chiidoku strategy treats every empty cell as a candidate that must survive four filters: its row is open, its column is open, its color area is open, and its neighbor relationship is allowed by the current game. Solve the most constrained unit first, place only when the reason is clear, and rescan after every confirmed Chiikawa.

Build a candidate ledger

Start with confirmed placements. Close their rows, columns, and color areas. Then remove cells ruled out by the live no-adjacency behavior. For every remaining color area, keep a short mental or written list of surviving cells.

You do not need to copy the whole board. Track the area with the fewest candidates, plus any row or column that is nearly determined. On mobile, use simple labels such as top/middle/bottom and the visible color rather than tiny coordinates that invite transcription mistakes.

Always return to Close after a placement. A fixed order prevents you from jumping to a complex assumption while an easy forced cell is waiting elsewhere.

Prioritize the most constrained area

An area with two candidates is more informative than one with many. Compare those candidates against open rows, columns, and the current adjacency exclusions. If one candidate would leave another unit without a place, reject it. If both remain possible, leave them and inspect how their shared rows or columns affect other areas.

The same “fewest candidates first” idea works for rows and columns. Do not focus only on color. A row can become forced because every color except one has been excluded from it, even when that last color area still has several cells elsewhere.

Use line confinement without guessing

Suppose every surviving cell for one color area lies in the same row. That area must eventually place its Chiikawa somewhere in that row. Since the row can contain only one, other color areas cannot depend on a separate placement in that row. Apply the equivalent reasoning to columns.

This is useful even when you cannot identify the exact cell yet. It converts a group of candidates into a restriction on another part of the board. Keep the relationship in notes and rescan for a unit reduced to one candidate.

Apply adjacency carefully

The current official description says Chiikawas cannot be placed next to each other. It does not publicly define the directions. Determine the active edge/diagonal behavior from the current tutorial or repeatable placement feedback before using it in your candidate ledger.

Once established for the current build, adjacency is a normal elimination rule. Apply it immediately after every placement, but do not widen it based on another puzzle. An incorrect diagonal assumption can delete the true answer; an incorrect edge-only assumption can keep illegal candidates alive.

Use contradiction as a last structured step

When direct deductions stop, choose a candidate from the smallest set and treat it as hypothetical. Close its row, column, color area, and live-game neighbors in your notes. Follow consequences without tapping. If any unsolved row, column, or color area is left with zero possible cells, the hypothesis is false.

If the branch remains consistent, that does not automatically prove it. The alternative may also remain consistent. Compare both until one contradicts a required unit or produces a forced chain. If neither resolves cleanly, return to the board and look for a missed direct constraint instead of flipping a coin.

Recover from a wrong path or mis-tap

If the game offers undo, learn its actual scope from the live interface. Do not assume it refunds hearts, streak state, or an entire chain. If no safe undo exists, pause and identify whether the error came from logic, stale adjacency advice, a color-border misread, or touch input.

For a logic error, rebuild candidate lists from confirmed placements. For an input error, adjust zoom, UI scale, tap pace, or device position if those options exist. Buying Heart + 1 without fixing the cause only changes how often the same error can occur.

Strategy by mode

In Campaign, use early levels to make the deduction order automatic. As the stages become more challenging, preserve the same process and expect candidate interactions to take longer. The creator does not publish exact difficulty bands, so judge the current board rather than attaching a strategy to an invented level range.

In Endless Mode, reset your mental ledger at the start of every generated puzzle. Do not carry a closed row, color shape, or adjacency pattern from the previous board. Protect the win streak by valuing reliable deductions over speed; the public description celebrates consecutive clears, not fast taps.

Common strategy failures

Scanning only colors

Rows and columns can force a placement before a color area looks tight. Rotate through all three unit types.

Using stale adjacency advice

The current English description says placements cannot be next to each other. Relearn the live direction scope.

Placing after a partial check

A cell surviving its row can still fail its column, area, or neighbor condition. Complete all four filters.

Continuing without a rescan

Every placement changes multiple units. Restart the deduction order instead of following visual momentum.

Practice without an invented board

Choose a current early Campaign puzzle and narrate each elimination: “closed row,” “closed column,” “filled color,” or “forbidden neighbor.” After a clear, recall which step produced the first forced placement and where a full rescan exposed the next one.

Repeat on several live boards rather than memorizing a static answer image. That practice transfers to random Endless puzzles and remains useful when the campaign adds themes or changes visuals.

Frequently asked questions

What should I scan first?

Close every already-filled row, column, and color area, then apply current adjacency exclusions. After that, look for a unit with one candidate.

What if no area has one candidate?

Check constrained rows and columns, then use line confinement between areas. Only after direct deductions fail should you test a low-branching hypothesis in notes.

Is guessing ever necessary?

Random tapping is not a strategy. A structured hypothetical branch can reject a candidate by contradiction without committing it in the game.

Does the strategy work in Endless Mode?

The public foundation is the same. Reset the ledger for every random board and follow any additional live instruction the mode displays.

Can I use old 300-level examples?

Only with caution. Their level state and adjacency rule may be obsolete. Prefer the live 400-level version and current description.
